A high-ranking official from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has harshly criticized Israel, calling for an end to the military campaign in the Gaza Strip. According to him, warm relations between states could turn into a “cold world.”
The Times of Israel writes about this.
According to ToI, the senior official, while remaining anonymous, noted that the ongoing conflict in Gaza could cause the warm relations between the UAE and Israel to gradually turn cold. He also noted that the countries included in the Abraham Accord are not considering the possibility of a complete severance of relations, but recognize that recent events may lead to a change in the nature and intensity of contacts between the parties.
The statement was the harshest warning Israel has received from one of its Abraham Accords partners. It highlights the seriousness of the situation and the possible consequences of the ongoing conflict in the region for future diplomatic relations.
It is noted that since the signing of the Abraham Accords, relations between Israel and the UAE have been deeper than those with Egypt and Jordan, and have included significant trade and cultural ties. However, as the situation deteriorated following the outbreak of the Gaza War and the establishment of a hard-line government in Israel, high-level relations became less active and meetings and events were suspended.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continued contacts with UAE leaders, but his latest address to UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed raised eyebrows when Netanyahu offered to pay benefits to Palestinian workers temporarily unable to work in Israel. This proposal was rejected, highlighting the UAE’s dissatisfaction and reluctance to take such measures.
