The United States has again added the Houthis to the list of global terrorist organizations due to their attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
This was stated in a statement by White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
The White House said that over the past months, Yemen’s Houthis have carried out unprecedented attacks on US forces and international maritime vessels operating in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. These actions coincide with the “textbook definition of terrorism.”
Sullivan argues that American personnel, civilian sailors and their partners, as well as global trade and freedom of navigation, are at risk due to the Houthi attacks.
“Today, in response to these ongoing threats and attacks, the United States announced the designation of Ansarallah, also known as the Houthis, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. This decision is an important tool in preventing the Houthis from financing terrorism, further restricting their access to financial markets and forces them to take responsibility for their actions,” said the White House adviser.
It is worth noting that this decision will come into force 30 days after the announcement. This will allow the US side to provide humanitarian exceptions so that actions are directed against the Houthis, and not against the civilian population of Yemen.
At the same time, the United States emphasized that if the Houthis stop their attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, then Washington will immediately reconsider this definition.
