Police Chief Kobi Shabtai said he accepts his role in the Meron disaster and is ready to resign as soon as the government makes a decision.
He welcomed the report, which found him and other senior officials personally responsible for the deadly stampede in 2021.
“Commissioner Shabtai, as he has always done in all his positions, accepts full responsibility,” the police statement said. “Commissioner Shabtai asked for his resignation at the beginning of the year, but agreed to the government’s request to remain given the military situation. Commissioner Shabtai will leave resign after 40 years of service as soon as the government decides to do so.”
Other people named in the report, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, have not yet commented on the findings.
