Astronomers have recorded the appearance of a new comet, which promises to become brighter than many stars in the night sky. Called C/2023 A3, the comet was discovered last year but has only now caught the attention of scientists for its potential brilliance.
Space writes about this.
Currently, C/2023 A3 is located distantly between the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn, but will approach the Sun and Earth in September this year. The comet is expected to be a bright feature in the night sky, perhaps even visible to the naked eye.
According to astronomers, C/2023 A3 can outshine most stars in the night sky. However, predicting the comet’s behavior remains challenging, and forecasts are subject to change.
As the comet approaches the Sun, it will begin to evaporate its icy composition, forming a shell of gas and dust around its core known as a coma. This can cause a comet tail to appear and make it even brighter.
However, there is a possibility that the comet will be destroyed by the heat of the Sun. This could be the first time this could happen, given that C/2023 A3 may be approaching the Sun for the first time. However, even if destroyed, the comet may become a bright object in the night sky due to the release of gas and dust.
