Israeli Swimmer Ami Dadaon Secures Bronze Medal in 50-Meter Freestyle S4 Event at 2024 Paris Paralympics
Israeli swimmer Ami Dadaon made headlines on Friday as he secured a bronze medal in the men’s 50-meter freestyle S4 competition at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. This marks Dadaon’s fourth medal in just five events at the prestigious tournament, solidifying Israel’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the world of competitive swimming.
The 23-year-old Dadaon, who was born with cerebral palsy, entered the event with the world record – 36.25 seconds, set in 2022 – but ultimately finished in third place with a time of 37.11 seconds, just 0.36 seconds shy of the record. Dadaon’s bronze is Israel’s 10th medal in Paris, surpassing the country’s total of nine medals at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, and sets a new benchmark for Israel’s Paralympic performance, marking a double-digit haul for the first time since the 2004 Athens Games.
Dadaon’s impressive performance is not a new phenomenon; he has consistently impressed in his events, winning gold in the men’s 200-meter freestyle S4 and the men’s 100-meter freestyle S4, and silver in the men’s 150-meter individual medley SM4. In his fifth and final event, the men’s 50-meter breaststroke SB3, Dadaon finished in fifth place. Prior to his bronze medal, he had also set a Paralympic record in the heats for the 100-meter freestyle S4.
Dadaon’s journey to international success began at the tender age of six, when he started swimming. Today, he is a renowned athlete with a impressive array of accolades to his name, including three medals at the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics, seven gold medals at the World Championships in 2022 and 2023, and nine gold medals at the European Championships between 2018 and 2024. In 2023, Dadaon was awarded the Israeli Paralympic sportsman of the year award.
As the 2024 Paris Paralympics continue to thrill and captivate, Israel has the opportunity to add to its impressive medal tally in the coming days, with swimming and canoeing competitions still to be held. The Games conclude on Sunday, with the possibility of even more thrilling moments to come.
