As the dust settles on Manchester United’s latest Europa League outing, it’s clear that the Red Devils are in a spot of bother. Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce proved to be a stubborn opponent, yet again, and United were held to a draw that leaves them precariously perched in 21st place, just outside the play-off qualification spots on goal difference.
The game had the makings of a thriller, with Fenerbahce’s psychedelic green shirts crammed into the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, creating a cauldron-like atmosphere that tested United’s mettle. Christian Eriksen’s first-half strike seemed to have put the visitors in the driving seat, but a second-half leveller from Youssef En-Nesyri sent the home crowd into raptures and secured a share of the spoils.
From a Manchester United perspective, there were some standout performers, starting with the mercurial Manuel Ugarte, whose box-to-box displays have left fans purring. The Uruguayan was a dynamo in midfield, making 14 defensive actions and winning five duels as United struggled to contain the ferocious pace of Fenerbahce’s attacks. His last-ditch block to deny En-Nesyri a certain goal was a highlight reel moment, and his 8/10 rating reflected his dominance in the middle of the park.
Eriksen, too, showed glimpses of his old self, snatching a crucial goal from the edge of the box and impressing with his suite of skills. His contract is up in the summer, but this performance will surely have strengthened the Dane’s case for an extension.
In contrast, Diogo Dalot was left to rue a spotty evening, which saw him struggle to contain the pace and trickery of Fenerbahce’s right-winger, Allan Saint-Maximin. Lax defending from the Portuguese allowed the Frenchman to set up the equaliser, and there were other occasions where Saint-Maximin looked poised to break free. His 5/10 rating reflected a night that was marked by mistakes and misadventures at the back.
As United look to regroup and recharge, the Europa League may prove a gruelling experience. With the likes of Malmo and Braga lurking in the shadows, the pressure is on to turn things around and fast. Yet, as evidenced by Eriksen’s display, there is still plenty to inspire and motivate this United team. The next hurdle is just around the corner, and the challenge is on.
