As Liverpool’s performance in the Champions League suggests, under the guidance of new manager Arne Slot, the Reds are experiencing a remarkable start to the season. Their latest victory over RB Leipzig, a 1-0 win, has set new records for the club, making it their 11th win in 12 games, a feat that has never been achieved before.
The only blight on an otherwise perfect record is a shock 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, but Wednesday’s win over Leipzig has continued the Reds’ impressive streak. This is the sixth-straight away victory to start a season, another record that Liverpool has never broken before.
Slot, who has made a seamless transition into the dugout, replacing the legendary Jurgen Klopp, expressed his pride in his team’s achievement. “We should be proud because so many great teams have worn this shirt and so many great managers have been at the club, so to achieve something that hasn’t been done before is almost impossible and always nice,” he said. However, he emphasized that records and achievements are not as important as trophies, indicating that his focus remains on bringing success to the club.
In a post-match interview, Slot praised his team’s performance, particularly their response to a tough start against Chelsea over the weekend. “I don’t think we started the game very well but after the first 15 minutes I liked a lot of what I saw,” he said. “We played through their press and opened up attacks many times, which led to the first goal and many other chances. It is a pity at the end of a game like that when you need big roles from your two centre-backs and goalkeeper. A game like that should have been ours after 60 to 70 minutes.”
He also praised individual players, including Darwin Nunez, who made a significant impact on the game. “It is good to see all of our players scoring. In the lead up Cody [Gakpo] and Mo [Salah] were just as important as Darwin. But Darwin was strong, comfortable on the ball, fighting if he had to defend, and he made it very difficult for the two centre-backs of Leipzig.” He expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, saying, “If you play a big team away they will always have moments. I liked that in this game we had total dominance like in all the other games apart from Chelsea. I was more worried after Chelsea. This was much more how I like to see my team play. We had much more ball possession.”
