Arsenal’s Season on the Rocks Ahead of Massive Liverpool Clash
Arsenal’s season has been a jumbled mess of injuries, suspensions, and tough fixtures, leaving fans feeling anxious and uncertain about their team’s chances of success. Ahead of this weekend’s massive Premier League match against Liverpool, we spoke to award-winning illustrator and Arsenal fan Matty Long to get his take on the season so far.
The 2024-25 campaign has been a difficult one for the Gunners, with early season injuries to key players and a tough run of fixtures that left them struggling to find consistency. Despite some bright moments, including a 2-0 win over West Ham United, the team has failed to build momentum, and fans are left wondering what might have been.
"Messy and disjointed" is how Matty Long describes the season so far, citing the numerous injury concerns and tough fixtures as key factors. "When we seem to have players going off injured or getting suspended, it feels like we’re never quite getting the consistency we need," he says.
Despite the struggles, there have been some standout performers, including 21-year-old right-back Bukayo Saka, who has made nine goal contributions in seven Premier League games this season. "He’s been fantastic," says Long. "I’m so impressed with his pace, skill, and work rate." An additional mention goes to Kai Havertz, who Long notes has become "essential" to the team.
However, concerns remain regarding the team’s attack, with Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus failing to make an impact in their minutes on the pitch. "I’m really struggling to see how we’re going to create chances and score goals without Odegaard and Saka," Long laments.
The red card issue has also caused consternation, with Long questioning whether a "conspiracy" exists. "I just think it’s about being more sensible, being more professional, and showing more respect to the referee," he opines. Liverpool’s Roma-like calm under pressure has impressed him, and he sees Arne Slot’s approach as "polished" and "controlled."
In the absence of Odegaard and Saka, Long expects the team to face an uphill battle against the Reds. "We’re going to have to dig deep and find a way to win without two of our top players," he says, predicting a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
For fans and players alike, the stakes are high, and the season hangs in the balance. Can Arsenal rediscover their momentum, or will they be left to ponder what might have been?
