Liverpool FC midfielder Curtis Jones, once an unwitting star of a viral meme, has finally shared his side of the story. In an exclusive ‘A Day With…’ video for LFCTV, Jones, now 23, relived the moment that turned him into a cult hero for the Reds faithful.
The clip, widely shared on social media, shows a young Jones, just 18 at the time, addressing the fans after a thrilling 10-9 penalty win over Arsenal in the 2019 Carabao Cup fourth round. His soft-spoken words, “‘Hello Reds, what a win that was then,” have since been wheeled out as a popular meme, much to Jones’ amusement.
In the video, Jones explained that he was unaware of the spotlight that would follow his words, which were dictated to him by a media team member. “She said, ‘Yeah, if you just say like, “What a win that was then Reds, I’m happy to see you all there”, this that and whatever. So I’ve just said it how she told me to say it!”
The midfielder, now a key player in the Liverpool first team, has come a long way since his debut in 2017-18 season. He credits his teammates, including then-team-mate Georginio Wijnaldum, for taking him under their wing and guiding him through the early days. “They played a massive part in shaping me into the kid I am now,” he said, reflecting on the experience.
Jones also highlighted the valuable lessons he learned from team-mates Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, and James Milner. “They taught me the importance of being respectful, polite, and considerate. They showed me that, even as professionals, you should always be mindful of your surroundings and those around you.”
As Jones looks back on his journey, he is grateful for the support he received and the memories he has made at Anfield. His story serves as a reminder that even the smallest moments can have a lasting impact, and that a little bit of humility and attention to detail can go a long way in making a lasting impression.
