Against the Eagles at home in Week 7, the Giants lost 28-3. The team is 2-5 through their first seven games of the 2024 season. New York has a matchup against the Steelers on MNF in Week 8.
At a movie premier for his father’s contribution to football, “The Duke: Wellington Mara’s Giant Life,” Giants’ owner John Mara spoke about head coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen. He expressed confidence in the current regime, stating that the Giants do not have any plans to make changes at head coach or GM. This comes despite the team’s 2-5 record through their first seven games of the season.
Mara’s words were met with scrutiny, especially considering the team’s history of coach turnover. Since Tom Coughlin’s resignation in 2015, the Giants have had four different head coaches, with none lasting more than three years. The last coach, Joe Judge, was fired after just two seasons. The team’s search for a new GM began in 2021, and they eventually hired Joe Schoen from the Buffalo Bills, bringing him and his familiar offensive coordinator, Brian Daboll, on board.
The partnership appeared to bear fruit in 2022, with the Giants posting a 9-7-1 record and making the playoffs. However, the following season, they regressed to 6-11 and missed out on a top-three pick in the draft. Now, seven games into the 2024 season, the Giants are 2-5 and facing the possibility of missing the playoffs for the 11th time in 13 seasons.
Despite this, Mara remains committed to Daboll and Schoen, citing his positive evaluations from meeting with them. However, Mara’s words have sparked debate, and only time will tell if the Giants’ coaching staff will be able to turn the team’s fortunes around.
