Jose Mourinho has boldly proclaimed that the two Premier League teams currently competing in the Europa League, both of which he has previously managed, are the clear favourites to lift the trophy in Bilbao next year. The charismatic Portuguese coach believes that Manchester United and Tottenham are the strongest contenders, citing the significantly superior quality, intensity, pace, and tactical acumen of the Premier League.
“When I have to say which are the two biggest candidates to win the Europa League, I think it’s easy,” Mourinho declared. “Manchester United and Tottenham. The Premier League is a different level of quality, intensity, pace, tactical culture – a different level of everything. Tomorrow, I think we are going to play against one of the two strongest teams.”
Mourinho, who managed United from 2016 to 2018, winning both the League Cup and Europa League, went on to predict that Manchester United will field their strongest available team against their opponents, given their busy fixture list. “I think they will come with maximum strength,” he said. “I don’t think they are going to rotate players before next weekend’s match [at West Ham United]. They come full strength… that’s what I’d do.”
Mourinho’s comments undoubtedly reflect his insider’s perspective on the physical and mental demands of the Premier League, which is notoriously unforgiving. His assessment is also supported by the impressive strength in depth and consistency demonstrated by both Manchester United and Tottenham this season, with both teams’ campaigns reflecting the intense competitiveness and intricate tactical battles that typify the English top flight.
