Pedro Almodóvar believes that both Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore should be nominated for an Oscar for their performances in his latest film, The Room Next Door. The Spanish director, who has won two Oscars in the past, is confident in the abilities of his leading ladies, who play the roles of two old friends, a war correspondent and her terminally ill friend, respectively.
Their performances in the film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and received an 18-minute standing ovation, are nothing short of remarkable. Almodóvar has a knack for drawing out incredible performances from his leading ladies, and this film is no exception.
In the past, Almodóvar has won two major awards: the best original screenplay Oscar for Talk to Her in 2003 and the award for best foreign language film for All About My Mother in 1999. Given his track record, it’s no surprise that he is optimistic about the chances of his latest film being recognized.
However, despite his passion for the Oscars, Almodóvar is trying to keep a level head about the awards season. “They absolutely matter to me, but I also don’t want to think about it, and I have promised myself not to,” he said in an interview with The Times of London. “There’s still too much time left and if I think about it I’ll become too obsessed.”
Despite his attempts to downplay the significance of the awards, Almodóvar is clearly enthusiastic about the possibilities. “I love the Oscars! Give me more Oscars. One, two, all day. They’ll be really welcome,” he exclaimed. Only time will tell if his stars are recognized with the coveted award, but one thing is certain – they have already won over the hearts of critics and audiences alike.
