With hours left until the Sunday World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, several Israeli politicians expressed support for the Albiceleste, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu among the most prominent figures sharing messages in support of Argentina.
Netanyahu was gifted an official shirt from the Argentine national team by the Argentine Ambassador to Israel, Axel Wahnish, in a video the diplomat shared on Saturday on X.
“Israel is with Argentina,” read the post shared by Wahnish, while he also showed Netanyahu a message by Argentine President Javier Milei.
“Thank you for your generosity, because you are also a friend of mine. And I’m really happy to learn that you are supporting Argentina because of our friendship,” said Milei in the message.
“Javier, you are a real friend, a great friend. We support you, we support Argentina, in so many ways, including tomorrow,” said Netanyahu, and ended the message wishing good luck in the World Cup final.
“I don’t hide that I support Argentina, and I think most Israelis support Argentina because of Milei’s revolution in the relationship between our countries,” Netanyahu told Wahnish, and ended by chanting: “Vamos Argentina.”
“How does the song go? ‘It’s coming home’? Yes, it is. It’s coming home to Argentina,” Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar published on Thursday morning, hours after the semifinal match between Argentina and England, and also cheered: “Vamos Argentina.”
UN Ambassador Danny Danon also published on X, celebrating Argentina’s win with another “Vamos Argentina” comment, and made the same post in Hebrew.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who is banned from entering the United Kingdom, also posted on Instagram.
“I may not be able to enter the UK because I am destroying the idea of a Palestinian state, but two goals have entered nicely. Javier, congratulations, my friend!”
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir shared a picture of Milei and Argentina’s star player Lionel Messi at the Western Wall and said: “We will love those who love Israel. Let’s go, Argentina.”
Finally, Transport Minister Miri Regev posted: “Congratulations to the Argentine people and my friend President Milei. Fingers crossed for you in the final!”
