NASA launches three-pronged search for lunar caves, ice and hazards ahead of Moon base

NASA unveils three coordinated investigations aimed at identifying underground shelters, locating subsurface ice and monitoring hazardous surface conditions as preparatory work for a future Moon base. The agency says the effort is intended to clarify where and how crews could live and operate on the lunar surface while building knowledge necessary for eventual missions beyond the Moon.

The first strand of research focuses on natural subsurface cavities such as lava tubes and caves that could provide protection from radiation, micrometeoroid strikes and extreme temperature swings. Mapping and characterising these features would help mission planners assess their suitability for human occupation, logistics and infrastructure placement. Understanding cave distribution and accessibility is presented as a pragmatic step toward reducing the engineering burden of building fully exposed habitats.

A second investigation targets hidden water ice beneath the surface. Water is a strategic resource on the Moon: it can supply drinking water, be split into oxygen for life support and used to produce propellant. Detecting and quantifying subsurface ice deposits, particularly in permanently shadowed regions, will shape decisions about resource extraction, site selection and the design of support systems that could make a base more self-sufficient.

The third effort will monitor and characterise dynamic and environmental hazards on the lunar surface, including fine regolith, temperature extremes and fluctuating radiation levels. Data from these studies are expected to inform engineering requirements for habitats, suits and vehicles, as well as operational protocols to protect crews and equipment. Taken together, the three investigations aim to provide an evidence base for decisions about where to place initial facilities and what technologies are needed for sustained presence—work that also contributes to planning for future crewed ventures to Mars by testing concepts of in-situ resource use, habitat siting and long-duration human operations beyond Earth.
