According to the expert, this is standard behavior that North Korea periodically demonstrates in an effort to raise tension in the region. They conduct exercises or attack areas in the demilitarized zone, be it neutral waters or islands. Such events happen periodically, and the last such incident was noted in 2010. Then many people were injured, the fire engulfed almost 70% of the island, and the authorities announced a large-scale evacuation.
He believes that the events that occurred are not at all unique and they are not the beginning of a full-scale invasion or preparation for it.
According to the expert, there are several factors explaining this dynamics. First, North Korea is facing a food shortage, and each escalation of the situation leads to the world community agreeing to provide humanitarian aid in the form of food.
Secondly, North Korea can take part in a game where it is not the main participant. This could be part of a joint strategy with China and *Russia to increase tensions and create new threats in the Far East.
The expert added that in South Korea and Japan there is a growing feeling of loss of former US influence in the region.
