As the news of Real Madrid’s interest in Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to gain momentum, former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has weighed in on the potential transfer saga. According to Sherwood, it’s only a matter of time before Alexander-Arnold leaves Anfield, as he has won it all with the Merseysiders and will be eager to try his hand at a new challenge in Spain.
The 26-year-old full-back is in the final year of his contract and will be able to negotiate a pre-agreement with Real Madrid from January 1, sparking speculation that he may opt for a move to the Spanish capital. As one of Jude Bellingham’s closest friends, there’s even speculation that Alexander-Arnold has convinced him to join him in Madrid.
The news comes as Liverpool face a crisis, with three of their top players, including Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk, in the final year of their contracts. The Reds have been making progress this season, sitting top of the Premier League table and boasting a 100% record in the Champions League, but it’s unclear whether this can be enough to persuade the trio to stay at Anfield.
Sherwood, who managed Tottenham Hotspur from 2013 to 2014, believes that Alexander-Arnold is destined for Madrid, stating, “Once Real Madrid come knocking for you… he’s won everything at the football club and been a magnificent servant but there’s no chance they’re keeping him now I wouldn’t have thought.”
However, he doesn’t share the same concerns about Salah and Van Dijk, suggesting that it’s less clear where they would go to be better than Liverpool. Alexander-Arnold has been at Liverpool since a young age, recording 19 goals and 83 assists in 321 games in all competitions, winning one UEFA Champions League and one Premier League title, as well as other honors with the Anfield outfit. With Real Madrid circling, it’s unclear what the future holds for the talented young full-back.
