Manchester United’s Dependence on Casemiro Fernandes’ Leadership
Casemire Fernandes has wielded immense influence over Manchester United’s starting line-ups since being appointed club captain by Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2023. In a striking trend, the Dutchman has led the team in the majority of games, with only a handful of exceptions last term.
Among those rare absences was the 0-0 draw at Anfield and the 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal, when Scott McTominay donned the armband. Similarly, Casemiro was tasked with leading the team in defeats to Newcastle and Crystal Palace. In a one-off event, Casemiro’s former defensive partner, Raphael Varane, took the reins during the 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace in September.
