Manchester United’s Dependence on Casemiro Fernandes’ Leadership
Casemire Fernandes has wielded immense influence over Manchester United’s starting line-ups since being appointed club captain by Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2023. In a striking trend, the Dutchman has led the team in the majority of games, with only a handful of exceptions last term.
Among those rare absences was the 0-0 draw at Anfield and the 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal, when Scott McTominay donned the armband. Similarly, Casemiro was tasked with leading the team in defeats to Newcastle and Crystal Palace. In a one-off event, Casemiro’s former defensive partner, Raphael Varane, took the reins during the 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace in September. The man widely regarded as one of Manchester United’s most influential players has certainly made his presence felt, and it’s no surprise given his impressive displays on the pitch.
