Scientists have developed a new application using artificial intelligence that can recognize the sounds made by pigs and warn farmers about the negative emotions of animals. Sky news writes about this.
The app is able to interpret these sounds so farmers can understand the emotional state of the animals.
According to research, pigs make different sounds depending on their emotional state:
A short grunt usually indicates positive emotions. A long grunt indicates discomfort. High frequency sounds such as squeals and screams indicate stress.
It also found that pigs raised on pasture or organic farms were less stressed than animals raised in conventional conditions. Scientists hope the app will be useful in farm labeling in the future, allowing consumers to make informed food choices.
Co-leader of the study, biologist Elodie Mandel-Briefer from the University of Copenhagen, noted that farmers will be able to install an application on their phone that will translate the sounds of pigs into human-readable emotional signals.
