Ron Ely, the larger-than-life actor who captivated audiences as Tarzan in the 1960s, has left us too soon. The 86-year-old actor passed away at his home in Los Alamos, California, on September 29, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Hereford, Texas, Ely’s path to stardom was marked by a series of twists and turns. He was reportedly chosen for the iconic role of Tarzan at the last minute, after the original actor, Mike Henry, was injured in a chimpanzee attack during filming. Ely’s bravado, charm, and rugged good looks made him a natural fit for the role, and he went on to play Tarzan for several years.
Ely’s portrayal of the swinging, grappling V for Vendetta was a far cry from the more traditional, gruesome image of Tarzan, which was often associated with the character’s early movie days. Ely’s Tarzan was an educated bachelor, who had grown tired of civilization and sought solace in the tranquil surroundings of the African jungle. His on-screen chemistry with the wild animals of the jungle, particularly the chimps and tigers, was authentic and endearing, leaving audiences captivated.
Off-screen, Ely’s life was just as fascinating. He met his future wife, Valerie, at the Miss America pageant, where he was the emcee, and they married in 1984. The couple had three children together, and Ely, who had retired from acting by 2001, devoted himself to family life.
Tragedy struck in 2019 when Ely’s wife was brutally stabbed to death by their 30-year-old son, Cameron, who was subsequently shot and killed by police. Ely, who was home during the incident, had expressed concerns over the police’s account of events, arguing that his son’s shooting was not justified.
Ely’s acting career was marked by a series of memorable roles, including the 1975 action film Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze. He also penned two mystery novels featuring a detective named Jake Sands, Night Shadows in 1994 and East Beach in 1995. After retiring from acting, Ely turned to writing, a passion he had long nurtured.
In a statement, his daughter, Kirsten Casale Ely, paid tribute to her father’s enduring legacy: “He was an actor, writer, coach, mentor, family man, and leader. He created a powerful wave of positive influence wherever he went. The impact he had on others is something I have never witnessed in any other person – there was something truly magical about him.”
As the world mourns the loss of this extraordinary talent, we remember Ron Ely as a shining star who left a lasting imprint on the world of entertainment. His Tarzan will continue to swing through the trees, a symbol of strength, courage, and the power of the human spirit.
