Federico Chiesa’s Liverpool Dreams Slowly Fading Away
Federico Chiesa has been touted as a potential loanee return to Serie A after a dismal start at Liverpool, but the reality may be far from that. The 27-year-old has struggled to make an impact since his £12.5 million move from Juventus in the summer transfer window, with just three appearances to his name, only one as a starter.
Chiesa has been sidelined for the last four games due to an injury, and it seems he won’t be back anytime soon, with coach Arne Slot attributing his lack of progress to the intensity of the English league. “Going to a league where the intensity may be higher than the Italian league, that makes it difficult for him to make the step towards the intensity levels the rest of the team is at,” Slot said.
Rumors of a swift return to Italy have surfaced, with CalcioMercato reporting that he could move back to Serie A on a six-month loan, with Inter Milan, AC Milan, and AS Roma as potential destinations. However, these claims overlook the reality of Chiesa’s situation.
On the contrary, his teammates and coaches have spoken highly of the winger, with goalkeeper Alisson crediting him with a “huge smile” and “extreme happiness” about joining the Reds. Alisson also praised Chiesa’s quality, saying, “He shows it every day. We are lucky to work with him, he’s a top-level player who can help our team.”
Manager Arne Slot seems to be more understanding of Chiesa’s struggles, acknowledging that it’s a “big disappointment” for the player to go in and out of training sessions. However, he was quick to emphasize that Chiesa has signed a long-term contract, and he will be given every opportunity to make up for lost time and adjust to the team’s style of play.
Despite the speculation surrounding a potential loan move, it appears unlikely that Chiesa will take the side step and opt for a Serie A return. Instead, he will be focused on rebuilding his fitness and match sharpness to make a meaningful impact at Liverpool. As Slot put it, “I feel sorry for him, but he’s signed a long-term contract so we will see what he brings for us.”
