As the 2024-25 Championship season kicks off, many have been left wondering if Leeds United have what it takes to get back to the Premier League. After the agony of last season’s playoff final defeat to Southampton, the Whites are determined to make up for it this time around. And so far, they’re showing all the right signs.
With 11 games played, Leeds sit proudly in second place, collecting 22 points and losing just once. Unfortunately, that single loss was a 2-1 defeat to Burnley, which arguably flattered the Clarets. Nevertheless, Leeds’ impressive display is undeniable, and it’s clear they’re determined to take it one game at a time.
One of the most frustrating aspects for Leeds fans has been the number of draws they’ve accumulated, though. Four draws out of 11 games may seem good on paper, but it’s far from ideal. The teams above them in the table, such as West Brom and Huddersfield, have more points due to their conversion of draws into wins. Nevertheless, forgiveness should be extended, given Leeds’ promising start.
Standout performers have been plentiful for Leeds, and one player who has particularly caught the eye is 20-year-old Wilfried Gnonto. Despite rumors of a summer departure, the Italian international has remained at the club and has continued to impress. He has started all 11 Championship games so far, contributing two goals and four assists. In fact, his goal involvements are almost equal to his tally from last season, where he managed 12 in 44 games.
It’s hard to pick a standout performance, but Gnonto’s display in the 3-0 thrashing of Coventry City stands out. His goal and assist helped Leeds to a resounding victory, and Stuart Rayner, chief football writer for The Yorkshire Post, gave him an 8/10.
However, injuries have been a concern for Leeds, and 26-year-old Dan James’ absence has been particularly felt. He made his most recent appearance in Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Watford, replacing Gnonto with just 18 minutes left. In that short space of time, he created two chances, according to Sofascore, placing him among the top three performers of the match. James’ stats vs. Watford in 18 minutes? 9 touches, 80% pass accuracy, 2 shots, 2 key passes, and 2 big chances created. Not bad for a cameo appearance.
Leeds may yet have some trick up their sleeve, no matter how adept they are. Starting James, who was described as “underrated” by Statman Dave, would allow Gnonto to rest and James to build his match fitness again. Saturday’s clash with game-changers Bristol City could be the perfect opportunity for this.
The Whites have already shown their strength, but it’s difficult not to wonder what they’d be like with an injection of extra pace and power from the flanks. Could Raphinha-esque flair solve the puzzle? Certainly, Leeds have been linked to a £17m sensation who could bring exactly that. The possibilities are endless as the Championship season unfolds.
