Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could soon return to management having reportedly held talks over taking the Swedish national team job.
Solskjaer has been out of management since being sacked by Manchester United in November 2021 after a poor start to the 2021/22 season.
He has since been linked with various positions and was heavily tipped to take the Besiktas job earlier in the 2023/24 campaign, but the Turkish giants eventually settled on ex-Portugal boss Fernando Santos.
Instead, Fotbollskanalen report Solskjaer could be appointed as the new head coach of the Swedish men’s national team. Solskjaer is said to have held talks over the role, but the Swedish FA will take their time to finalise an appointment.
Despite boasting a squad featuring the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, Alexander Isak, Victor Lindelof, Anthony Elanga and Viktor Gyokeres, Sweden were unable to secure a place at Euro 2024, finishing third in their qualifying group behind Belgium and Austria.
Former Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg was in line to take the Sweden job but an agreement collapsed over the winter. The Swedish FA will now consider foreign appointments having talked to Solskjaer and ex-Denmark striker Jon Dahl Tomasson, who is now in charge of Blackburn Rovers and previously managed Malmo. Solskjaer has never managed in Sweden but has coached in Nordic football with Molde in his native Norway.
During his time at United, Solskjaer was praised for his man management and tactical tweaks in big games, notably boasting a fine record against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. He failed to win a trophy while in the Old Trafford dugout but led the Red Devils to back-to-back top-four finishes – a feat that has not been matched by any United manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
