As Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, made three changes to his team for the Champions League clash against Leipzig, the Dutchman explained that it was “logical” to replace Curtis Jones with Alexis Mac Allister in the starting eleven. While some may have expected more changes given the Reds’ intense schedule, Slot opted to bring in Kostas Tsimikas, Mac Allister, and Darwin Nunez in place of Andy Robertson, Jones, and the injured Diogo Jota.
When asked about considering the upcoming league matches against Chelsea and Arsenal, Slot revealed that he didn’t prioritize those encounters when selecting his team. “I’ve tried to pick, in my personal opinion, the best possible team tonight, but, of course, you take into account that we played only two days ago,” he said. This led to Tsimikas starting in place of Robertson, with the Greek left-back getting his chance due to the short turnaround.
Regarding Jones, Slot acknowledged the midfielder’s impressive performance against Chelsea, saying, “For Curtis Jones, I think in everyone’s opinion, he was the best player on the pitch [vs. Chelsea].” However, the decision to drop him was influenced by his low game time this season. “He’s only played two games this season from the start and didn’t finish any of the two, so for me, it was a bit too early to play him again two days later,” explained Slot. Mac Allister, who is back from illness, was seen as a more suitable replacement.
As the team prepares for the double-header against Chelsea and Arsenal, some fans may wonder why Jarell Quansah and Wataru Endo aren’t getting more opportunities to rotation players like Ibrahima Konate and Ryan Gravenberch. Slot’s defensive decision-making will be scrutinized, but the Norwegian tactician is hopeful that Nunez can justify his selection with a goal or two against Leipzig. “What you’re always hoping that a striker would do, that’s scoring,” he said of Nunez’s potential impact. “But apart from scoring, also Darwin showed how important he was for us without the ball with his pressing.” With the Uruguayan’s defensive abilities, Slot is optimistic that he can bring a more well-rounded game to the forefront.
