Arsenal’s Quest for a New Leader: Nick Cushing in Sights
The north London club has begun the process of finding a new head coach, and according to a recent report, the primary target is none other than ex-Women’s Super League manager Nick Cushing. This comes after Jonas Eidevall’s resignation, which was met with a string of losses at the beginning of the 2024/25 WSL campaign. The investigation into possible successors has garnered a lot of interest, with names such as Kelly Smith, Casey Stoney, and Tony Gustavsson being thrown into the mix. However, it is Cushing who seems to be the club’s top choice.
With a successful tenure at Manchester City between 2013-2020, securing a league title, an FA Cup, and two League Cup trophies, Cushing’s experience in women’s football has undoubtedly caught Arsenal’s attention. Although he is currently based in the United States, where he heads up Major League Soccer’s New York City FC, the Gunners are reportedly willing to wait until the end of the year for him to make the move.
If Cushing is appointed, there is a likelihood of having to wait until 2025 to see him in action, considering his contract with New York City FC doesn’t expire until the end of the 2025 MLS season. The team is set to compete in the MLS Cup playoffs and could remain in the competition until as late as December.
Renee Slegers, who has taken over as the interim head coach, has gained two consecutive wins since her appointment, raising the possibility of her staying in the role permanently. When asked about the prospect, Slegers dismissed it, stating, “That is not on my mind at all.”
