The Snubbing of a Superstar: The Omissions from the CAF Africa Player of the Year Award are Baffling
Mohamed Salah’s omission from the CAF Africa Player of the Year award has left many wondering if there’s more to the story. The Liverpool forward has been consistently impressive, with seven goals and seven assists in 12 games under Arne Slot, following an equally impressive tally in Jurgen Klopp’s final campaign. Over the past year, no African player in the top 10 leagues has recorded more goal contributions in all competitions than Salah (29).
The snub is all the more surprising given Salah’s dominant performance in the current season, and the names included on the 10-man shortlist for the award. Amine Gouiri, Edmond Tapsoba, Simon Adingra, and others, while deserving of recognition, are not on the same level of elite form as Salah.
Theories point to factors outside of his performance on the pitch. Salah’s reputation in Egypt took a hit when he opted to receive treatment for his hamstring injury back at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre, rather than with his national team. It raises questions about whether outside influences played a role in his omission.
There is a sense that his absence is due to factors beyond his performances, particularly after an Africa Cup of Nations tournament marked by injury. As his agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, tweeted, “When I say that a footballer that played decades ago was better than one playing today, despite it being obviously not the case, I just feel so sophisticated and well-read.” It is clear that frustration and disappointment are felt by those close to the player.
Despite the nominees deserving of recognition, Salah’s exclusion is an oversight that will not be easily forgotten. As one of the best players in the world, his exclusion raises more questions than answers. After all, as the same agent so sarcastically tweeted, “I just feel so sophisticated and well-read.”
