Report: Man Utd to rival Real Madrid & Man City for Argentine starlet

Manchester United are reportedly set to make a move for 17-year-old River Plate prodigy Franco Mastantuono when the January transfer window opens. The attacking midfielder has already made a huge impact on the Argentine league, scoring eight goals in 12 matches, including one that put him on the radar of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Mastantuono’s incredible rise to prominence began at just 16, when he became River Plate’s youngest ever goalscorer. The Argentine giants took swift action to secure his future, handing him a new two-year contract until 2026 with a €45 million (£37.5 million) release clause, demonstrating their faith in his potential.

Real Madrid have been heavily linked with the student of football, with some Spanish reports suggesting that personal terms have already been agreed. Manchester City, meanwhile, are also said to be showing interest, with some tipping them to “blow up” Madrid’s approach. However, the latest development suggests that Manchester United are now also in the running.

Mastantuono’s future is currently tied to Argentina, as FIFA rules prohibit the international transfer of players under 18 unless their families make a non-footballing move abroad. However, with his 18th birthday just around the corner, he will be free to leave Argentina for a European club as early as the summer of 2025.

Manchester City’s capture of Claudio Echeverri from River Plate last January, who was 18 at the time, serves as a precedent, although he was immediately loaned back to his current club. Other top clubs, such as Manchester United, are willing to take a longer-term view, investing in the futures of players who have yet to reach their prime.

This approach is not without risk, as Real Madrid’s Vitor Roque, signed from Brazil at 17, has already proven to be a disappointment. However, others, such as Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, have flourished in similar circumstances. Manchester United’s own experience with Facundo Pellistri, a Uruguayan winger bought for a relatively small fee, remains a topic of debate, though their capture of Amad Diallo from Atalanta has started to look like a more savvy investment.

Chelsea are also keeping a close eye on the 17-year-old, having agreed a deal with Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle last year. The Blues will also bring in Brazilian teenage sensation Estevao Willian in 2025, further illustrating the trend of clubs targeting young talent.

As the January transfer window approaches, Manchester United’s positive interest in Franco Mastantuono adds fuel to the speculation surrounding his future. With the player’s enormous potential on full display, one thing is certain: the next few months will be a thrilling ride for fans of one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
