FBI Director Kash Patel needed a reminder on Wednesday after a Democratic lawmaker made reference to Dylann Roof, who killed nine people in a 2015 shooting at a Charleston church.
At a House hearing, Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA) referenced Patel’s past acknowledgement that there is “violent extreme ideology” on both sides of the political aisle. She then listed out examples like the Charleston shooting.
“These are not gotcha questions, and just deny, please, what you deem to be false. So Dylann Roof, who followed white supremacist propaganda, murdered nine black parishioners in Charleston in 2015. Do you deny this?” Kamlager-Dove said during Wednesday’s hearing.
“I’m sorry. Dylan Ruth?” Patel asked. “Can you give me some more information?”
“You’re head of the FBI, you probably know this. If you don’t know, that’s fine,” Kamlager-Dove responded.
“You can give me a reminder, I’ve got a lot in front of me,” Patel said.
“It was national news,” Kamlager-Dove said, then referencing Robert Bowers, who attacked a Pittsburgh synagogue, killing 11 people.
When Kamlager-Dove asked whether Patel “denied” that the event happened, Patel said he was looking for more information to refresh his memory on Roof.
“I’m not saying the other thing didn’t happen, I’m just asking for a little information,” he said.
Kamlager-Dove then mentioned Patrick Crusius, who murdered 23 people in an El Paso Walmart shooting in 2019.
“Well, I have to say all of these cases have been adjudicated,” she said. “As I said, they are not gotcha questions. These incidents were national news. So, and as director of the FBI, you have access to all of this information.”
