Slovenia’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2024–2025 represents a decisive step in the country’s international trajectory. Long associated with neutrality and non-alignment, Slovenia now stands out as a principled and proactive diplomatic actor, committed to dialogue, multilateralism, and the defense of international law.
Throughout 2025, Slovenia has demonstrated remarkable engagement in addressing some of the world’s most urgent crises. In April, it voted in favor of granting Palestine full UN membership and took the lead on initiatives related to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza—calling firmly for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and unhindered access to humanitarian aid. Slovenian diplomats have consistently raised their voices against escalating violence in Gaza, Ukraine, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, insisting on the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel, and demanding accountability in line with the UN Charter.
Slovenia has also been a steadfast supporter of Ukraine’s sovereignty. Speaking on behalf of the European members of the Security Council, Slovenia urged Russia to “give peace a chance,” reaffirming its commitment to a just, sustainable, and internationally grounded resolution.
What truly distinguishes Slovenia is its unwavering emphasis on meaningful peacebuilding, equitable negotiation, and the safeguarding of fundamental rights. Its decisions—recognizing Palestine and adopting clear positions on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict—have strengthened its reputation as a defender of justice, human dignity, and humanitarian principles within Europe and beyond.
Today, Slovenia’s diplomatic leadership offers an inspiring model for countries seeking a principled and constructive role in global governance. Its actions demonstrate the importance of collective international efforts not only to resolve current conflicts but also to reinforce the legitimacy of multilateral institutions. In doing so, Slovenia contributes to a more peaceful, stable, and just world—one where human dignity remains at the center of global decision-making.
