Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, and Chris Shiflett were the latest guests on the web series Track Star, where the trio displayed some impressive musical knowledge and discussed some of their favorite punk, hard rock, and emo bands.
The trio each took turns donning headphones and guessing the song that host Jack Coyne queued up for them. Mendel kicked things off with The Clash’s “London Calling,” which prompted Shiflett to show his The Clash tattoo; Shiflett then quickly named Van Halen’s “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love” and hailed them as “one of the greatest rock bands of all time.” Grohl’s first attempt saw him instantly naming Minor Threat, spotlighting his D.C. connection and praising the fact that while other bands would scream unintelligibly, Minor Threat actually wrote songs.

Later in the video, Mendel, Shiflett, and Grohl gushed about Buzzcocks (“They were one of the first punk rock bands that wrote songs about being lonely and heartbreak,” Grohl said), NOFX, Sonic Youth, Melvins, Void, Cheap Trick (whom Mendel named as “underrated”) and Rites of Spring. At the end of the video, Shiflett and Mendel queued a song for Grohl to guess — turns out Grohl wasn’t too familiar with the Finnish group Hanoi Rocks.
