Crew-12 Returns After 237 Days and a Century of Miles in Orbit

NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 astronauts splashed down back on Earth after a 237-day mission that covered more than 100 million miles and completed 3,792 orbits. The crew’s return caps a long-duration flight focused on research and operations that aim to tighten the link between orbital work and future expeditions beyond low Earth orbit. NASA and SpaceX teams oversaw the recovery and initial medical checks following splashdown.

The mission’s scientific agenda included experiments across human health, materials science and technology demonstrations intended to inform missions to the Moon and Mars. Crewmembers conducted research designed to improve understanding of physiological responses to extended microgravity and tested procedures and hardware concepts that could be adapted for deeper space operations. Several activities conducted during the flight are described as having potential applications both in orbit and on Earth, particularly in biomedical research.

In addition to laboratory work, the flight achieved notable extravehicular activity milestones. Spacewalks executed during the mission pushed operational limits and documented methods that may be used on future long-duration missions. Mission data, including measurements from life-science investigations and engineering tests, will be transferred to ground teams for detailed analysis to assess performance and readiness for subsequent exploration campaigns.

Recovery operations returned crew and hardware safely to Earth where samples and experiment results will undergo further processing and evaluation. The outcomes of those analyses are expected to contribute to planning and risk reduction for upcoming missions beyond low Earth orbit, shaping both technical approaches and scientific priorities for human exploration in the years ahead.
