Suspected drunk driver wounds multiple pedestrians at Beersheba Lag Ba'omer celebration

Beersheba police opened an investigation Monday evening after a traffic incident during a Lag Ba’omer procession in the city left several pedestrians wounded.

The driver, a resident of Arara in the Negev, was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and attempted to flee after he struck pedestrians.

Police officers, aided by fighters from the Sahar Brigade, apprehended him at the scene.

Magen David Adom (MDA) reported that three individuals were evacuated to Soroka Hospital in light condition: a 4-year-old girl with a head wound, a 19-year-old man, and a woman in her 40s with wounds to her limbs.

Other people with minor wounds were treated at the scene.

Rabbi Nitzan Helek, director of a Chabad school, told Walla, “We were in a Lag Ba’omer procession, 800 residents were marching, the road was blocked, and there were police all around. Then suddenly, a vehicle came through, driving between the children.”

“It was a great miracle,” continued Helek, “children were thrown into the air when he hit us. They tried to stop him, jumped on the vehicle, but he kept driving between the children. It’s unbelievable what happened.”
