Free morning-after pill in high street pharmacies accessed by hundreds of thousands

Since October, the morning-after pill has been offered free of charge at participating high street pharmacies across England under a new government-funded scheme, and hundreds of thousands of women have accessed emergency contraception through the service. The policy aims to improve timely access to treatment that is most effective when taken promptly after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.

The scheme enables people to obtain emergency contraception without a prescription following a brief assessment by a participating pharmacist. Pharmacists supply the pill and provide clinical advice on use, side effects and ongoing contraception options, and can signpost or refer individuals to local sexual health services if further care is needed. The approach is intended to reduce delays that can diminish effectiveness and to expand points of access beyond clinics and general practice.

Public health and service providers report substantial early uptake since the measure began. Official counts describe the number of supplies as reaching into the hundreds of thousands, reflecting both demand and the geographic reach of pharmacies involved in the rollout. Health officials say they will continue to monitor usage patterns to assess whether the service is reaching groups with historically lower access to sexual health care and to ensure consistent provision across regions.

Advocates for sexual and reproductive health emphasise that emergency contraception is a time-sensitive option and should not replace regular contraceptive methods. The initiative complements existing services offered by the NHS and local sexual health clinics, which continue to provide a range of contraceptive advice and longer-term methods. Health authorities have described ongoing work to ensure participating pharmacies receive appropriate training and safeguarding guidance as part of the service delivery model.
