Researchers have found a measurable acceleration in the rate of global warming after adjusting for known natural influences. By removing the effects of El Niño, volcanic eruptions and solar cycles, the analysis shows the planet warmed at roughly 0.35°C per decade over the past ten years, compared with about 0.2°C per decade for the period from 1970 to 2015.
The change in trend becomes apparent around 2013 to 2015 and appears consistently across five major global temperature datasets. The study reports the acceleration with more than 98% statistical certainty, indicating that the observed increase in the warming rate is robust within the methods and adjustments applied.
The authors achieved these results by statistically removing short-term variability and external forcings commonly known to modulate global surface temperatures. After these adjustments, the residual trend indicates a stronger underlying warming signal in the most recent decade. Comparison across multiple independent datasets was used to test the persistence and significance of that signal.
The reported acceleration does not replace assessments of absolute temperature change but highlights a change in the pace at which global average temperatures are rising. The study’s approach isolates longer-term trend behavior from cyclical and episodic influences, providing a clearer measure of background warming over recent years. The consistency across independent records strengthens the case for a genuine shift in trend.
Researchers emphasise that continuous, high-quality temperature monitoring and transparent, reproducible analyses are essential for tracking such changes. Further work will be required to quantify the relative contributions of anthropogenic and residual natural factors to the accelerated rate, and to integrate these findings into ongoing climate assessments and modelling efforts.
