Ali G Film Subject Says He Was Playing Along With Sacha Baron Cohen’s Prank

A new dispute over Ali G: Who Iz I? has emerged after Joshua Loudermilk, one of the men presented as having been caught out in the film, said he realised early in production that he was dealing with Sacha Baron Cohen. Rather than alerting the crew, Loudermilk says he continued the encounter while adopting the role expected of him: a hard-right Maga supporter willing to take an extreme line on the United States border.

Loudermilk, a 54-year-old aspiring actor from North Carolina, said his doubts began during filming when he was shown a prop that strained credibility: a gun designed to look like a wearable plastic backside. The device, he suggested, made the setup too absurd to be taken at face value. From that point, his account is that the dynamic shifted, at least for him, from being deceived to attempting to deceive the production in return.

The claim adds an unusual layer to the release of the new film, because Baron Cohen’s screen work has long relied on the tension between performance and reality. His characters often draw responses from people who believe they are taking part in conventional interviews or public-interest projects. In this case, Loudermilk’s version challenges the simplicity of that formula without disputing that he participated in the scene or that he presented himself on camera in the manner shown.

Sacha Baron Cohen has built much of the Ali G persona around exposing social attitudes through improvised encounters, a method that has repeatedly raised questions about consent, satire and who controls the final meaning of a scene. Loudermilk’s account does not establish what the filmmakers knew during production, but it does underline how difficult it can be to separate genuine belief, strategic performance and edited comedy when non-professional participants enter a project built on concealment.

For audiences, the episode may affect how the film’s most provocative moments are read. If Loudermilk recognised Cohen and chose to continue, the scene becomes less a straightforward prank than a contest between performer and participant, each believing he is managing the joke. That ambiguity is unlikely to weaken interest in Ali G: Who Iz I?; it may instead place renewed attention on the mechanics behind Baron Cohen’s confrontational style.
