A blow to Fiorentina’s attack: Gudmundsson to miss a month of action
Fiorentina’s 6-0 thrashing of Lecce was a perfect day at the office for the club, but coach Giovanni Monchi’s perfect day was tempered by an injury to star striker Albert Gudmundsson. Gudmundsson had to be substituted off the pitch with a right thigh flexor injury, and initial assessments suggest that he will be out of action for a month.
The 9th-minute withdrawal was a blow to Fiorentina’s attacking plans, but coach Palladino was quick to make a change and bring on Beltrán to replace Gudmundsson. The initial diagnosis is a Grade I-Grade II injury to the biceps femoris tendon in Gudmundsson’s right thigh, which will keep him sidelined for several weeks.
The injury means that Gudmundsson will miss several important matches for Fiorentina, including the Serie A clashes with Roma, Genoa, Torino, and Verona. At best, he may return to the squad after the international break for the November 24th match against Como, while a more delayed recovery could see him back in action as late as early December.
Palladino will have to get creative to fill the void left by Gudmundsson’s absence, and a number of players could be called upon to fill the role. Beltrán could be paired alongside Kean, while Kouamé and Colpani could be used as alternatives. The coach may also experiment with Bove and Adli in attacking midfield, tasking them with linking up midfield and attack.
While the loss of Gudmundsson is a significant blow, Fiorentina has shown resilience and depth in their squad, and Palladino will look to find a solution that allows the team to continue performing well without their star striker. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the severity of Gudmundsson’s injury and the length of his recovery, but for now, Fiorentina must find a way to adapt and keep their momentum going.
