Mike D transported the Ojai Valley Women’s Club back to the 1990s earlier this month, delivering a now-viral surprise performance of Beastie Boys classics. Watch footage below.
A few days before the April 11th appearance, the alternative band Very Nice Person — comprised of Mike D’s sons Skyler and Davis Diamond — advertised they would be joined by a “very special guest.”

To the delight of those in attendance at the community center, the spry 60-year-old rapper took the stage to deliver energetic renditions of Beastie Boys songs such as “So What’cha Want” from 1992’s Check Your Head and “Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun” from 1989’s Paul’s Boutique.

As seen in the footage posted online, Mike D and sons had the crowd bopping and moving for the more familiar “So What’cha Want,” while there was a slightly less enthusiastic reception to other songs.
In an interview with Ojai Valley News, promoter David Berger explained how the surprise appearance came together: “It came about just through befriending Mike and learning about his love for Ojai. He and I connected through his visits here and showed interest in wanting to do a show here and I was really focused on making that happen for him.”
Berger continued by revealing that he and his crew put the show together in “less than a week.” He added, “Being a huge Beastie Boys fan my whole life, it was a thrill to have Mike and his sons perform in Ojai. Not only do I feel that way, but I think the whole town feels that way.”
Mike D’s Ojai appearance took place a few days after he joined his sons during a gig in Malibu, when he also performed “So What’cha Want.”
Earlier this month, Beastie Boys released a deluxe reissue of their 2004 album, To the 5 Boroughs. Grab your copy here.
