Right-wing activists disrupted several joint Israeli-Palestinian ceremonies across the country on Monday’s Remembrance Day, with people shouting and playing music outside the places where the ceremonies were being held.
Organized by Standing Together, the disrupted ceremonies took place in southern Tel Aviv and Ra’anana, with protesters, including Mordechai David, Rami Ben Yehuda, and Sheffi Paz, attempting to force their way into the venue.
The ceremony, which was called to “end the cycle of violence,” had October 7 survivors and victims’ family members participating, such as Ayala Metzger, the daughter-in-law of Yoram Metzger, who was kidnapped on October 7 from Kibbutz Nir Oz and murdered in captivity, or Liora Ayalon.
Kholoud Khoushia, a Palestinian from Jenin whose son is currently being held in administrative detention, also spoke at the ceremony through a broadcast message.
Disruptions across Israel during Remembrance Day sirens
In a separate incident, a family in Lod was detained after shouting and disrupting the public order during the sirens that sounded nationwide to commemorate the fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism.
In total, five people -a mother and her four children- were arrested by the police because of the incident, which also affected a public ceremony hosted by the city’s municipality.
“The Israel Police views any violation of memorial ceremonies and public order as serious, and will continue to act with zero tolerance against lawbreakers, in order to preserve the honor of the fallen heroes of the Israeli military and victims of hostilities, and for public safety,” the police said.
Additionally, in the city of Beit Shemesh, two ultraorthodox men were caught while tearing down Israeli flags on the eve of Remembrance Day.
An online video showed the men using a long object to take down the flags, while another ran away with them once they were on the ground. While the first one was taken down without interruption, police officers intervened as he attempted to tear down a second flag.
The suspects were taken to the police station for questioning, after which a decision will be made on whether to request an extension of their detention in court.
The police stated that “this is an ugly and despicable act, as the suspects were not satisfied with the serious offense of desecrating the state flag, but did so intentionally on the eve of Memorial Day.”
