RZA Makes Direct Pitch to Obama to Induct Wu-Tang Into Rock Hall

Wu-Tang Clan only just found out that they would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year — which is why RZA hasn’t reached out yet to ask President Barack Obama to induct him. However, he still thinks it’s possible. “It would be crazy if Barack Obama came out to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” he laughs in an interview with Consequence. “I mean, that’s ridiculous, right?”

However, he adds, “If I was him, I would consider it. Like, ‘Baby, Michelle, you know what I think I’m about to go do? I think I’m about to go to Cleveland with the Wu-Tang Clan. Sade is going to be there. Phil Collins is going to be there. It’s gonna be a house full of good energy.’”

RZA initially mentioned Obama as a potential candidate for inducting him during a recent interview with Rolling Stone. The reason, he says, was that he’s never met the former President, but “I’m a big fan of his. My family are fans of his. I don’t have a lot of peoples’ pictures on my wall. I got the legends — Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Lee. And I had [Obama’s] picture on my wall for a long time and my children watched that from the time of his presidency to today — watched that growth and watched that image. So I’m genuinely a fan.”

It actually goes beyond fandom: “You want a hero to induct you. And so I was like, well, I don’t have a lot of heroes, but Barack Obama is one of them. That’s just what it is.”

“It’s okay to dream, right?” he adds. “There’s still a chance.”

Wu-Tang’s upcoming Rock Hall induction will follow the group’s ongoing “Final Chamber” tour this summer (get tickets here). Meanwhile, RZA’s fourth film as director, One Spoon of Chocolate, arrives in theaters on May 1st. The action thriller stars Shameik Moore as a former convict/military vet forced to confront the violent racism of a small town.
