Nearly 10,000 older women tracked for ten years showed small but measurable differences in hip bone density related to hot beverage habits. The long-term observational study found that regular tea drinkers had slightly higher hip bone density, while consuming more than five cups of coffee a day was associated with lower bone density. Moderate coffee intake did not appear to harm bone measures in the cohort.
The results add to a complex evidence base on how diet affects skeletal health in later life, particularly among postmenopausal women who face elevated fracture risk. Hip bone density is a clinically important marker because declines there are linked to higher odds of debilitating fractures. Although the reported differences were modest, researchers say the patterns observed over a decade merit attention given the large sample and extended follow-up.
Because the analysis is observational, it does not establish cause and effect. The study accounted for a range of factors but residual confounding — such as differences in physical activity, medication use, or overall diet quality — could influence outcomes. The authors note the need for further research to clarify mechanisms, including whether components of tea provide protective effects for bone or whether very high volumes of coffee might interfere with calcium balance or other physiological processes.
For clinicians and public-health practitioners the findings offer incremental evidence rather than definitive guidance. They underscore the importance of considering beverage habits alongside established determinants of skeletal health, such as exercise, nutrition and smoking status. Future studies, including trials or investigations in more diverse populations, will be necessary to determine how these associations should influence prevention strategies for bone health and fracture risk in aging populations.
