What does the frequency of your bowel movements say about your life expectancy?

A new study, which included more than 1,400 participants, pointed to what the researchers called the “golden zone” of bowel movement frequency – a measure that, they say, may indicate gut health and even help reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

According to the study, which was conducted, among others, by microbiome researcher Sean Gibbons, people considered healthy, who do not suffer from kidney diseases or gastrointestinal diseases such as Crohn’s disease or irritable bowel syndrome, tend to have a bowel movement usually between once and twice a day. The researchers defined this range as the ideal range. It was also noted that bowel movement frequency does not only affect the digestive system, but may also have broader implications for other body systems. Gibbons emphasized that maintaining a normal bowel movement rhythm may contribute to overall health and reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases.

The researchers divided participants’ bowel habits into four main categories: Constipation – once or twice a week; the low range of normal – three to six times a week; the high range of normal – once to three times a day; and diarrhea – four times a day or more, in most cases involving liquid stool.

The study’s findings showed that participants who deviated from the central range defined as normal were more exposed to hidden health problems. It was also found that women, young people, and those with a low body mass index tended to have bowel movements less frequently compared to others. The researchers noted that the absence of a bowel movement for one day may still be considered within a reasonable range, but emphasized that a persistent deviation from the normal range – less than once a day or more than twice a day – may be a sign that warrants examination of diet or consultation with medical advice.

In the conclusion of the study, the researchers emphasized that regularity in bowel activity remains a key factor in maintaining body health, and may even contribute to extending life expectancy.

It should be emphasized that the above does not constitute medical advice, and in any case of doubt or unusual symptoms, a doctor should be consulted.
