Free Pharmacy Service Provides Morning-After Pill to Hundreds of Thousands in England

Hundreds of thousands of women have obtained the morning-after pill free of charge at participating high street pharmacies under a scheme introduced in England in October. The service removes the purchase cost for emergency hormonal contraception, allowing pharmacists to supply the medication following a brief clinical consultation without a fee.

Under the scheme, pharmacists follow clinical protocols to assess suitability and provide the most appropriate product, including levonorgestrel or ulipristal acetate formulations where indicated. The pharmacy consultation is intended to ensure safe use, to advise on ongoing contraception options, and to signpost to specialist sexual health services where necessary.

Since its introduction, the service has been used by a substantial number of women seeking time-sensitive emergency contraception. The availability at high street pharmacies aims to increase timely access by offering a local, walk-in option that does not require a prior appointment, an important consideration given the greater effectiveness of emergency contraception when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse.

Emergency contraception is most effective the sooner it is taken; levonorgestrel is generally recommended within 72 hours, while ulipristal acetate can be effective up to 120 hours after unprotected sex. Providing the pill without charge at pharmacies is intended to reduce cost-related barriers and support prompt treatment, complementing existing services delivered by clinics and general practices.

Health authorities will continue to monitor uptake and service delivery as the scheme operates, including its impact on access to contraception and the wider sexual health system. The pharmacy provision represents a policy step to broaden immediate access to emergency contraception across England and to integrate community pharmacies more fully into sexual and reproductive health pathways.
