G20 2026: Trump to host next year’s Summit; Florida Golf Club chosen as venue

US President Donald Trump on Friday confirmed that he plans to host the 2026 G20 summit at his Trump National Doral resort in Miami. “It’s going to be at Doral,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office after announcing Miami as the venue for next year’s summit. “Everybody wants it there because it’s right next to the airport, it’s the best location, it’s beautiful, a beautiful everything.” Trump, who has faced repeated accusations of enriching himself during his presidencies, emphasised that he would not personally profit from hosting the summit. “We will not make any money on it. We’re doing a deal where it’s not going to be money, there’s no money in it. I just want it to go well,” he said, as quoted by AFP. He also noted practical reasons for the choice, saying that most Miami hotels are usually fully booked in December. “Each country will have its own building. I think it will be really a beautiful thing,” Trump added. Trump, a native of New York who has made Florida his home, owns Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach and the Doral resort near Miami. He had previously proposed hosting the 2020 G7 summit at Doral during his first presidency, but that plan faced intense criticism from Democrats, who called it a “brazen example” of presidential corruption. The summit was eventually canceled due to media backlash and the Covid-19 pandemic. Regarding international leaders, Trump said he would be open to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping attending the 2026 summit. “I would love them to, if they want to,” he said. “They would be observers, and I’m not sure if they’d want to come as observers,” even though both countries are G20 members. Trump also confirmed that he would skip this year’s G20 summit in South Africa and instead send vice president JD Vance. “I won’t be going, JD will be going. Great vice president, and he looks forward to it,” he said, referencing previous, debunked claims about the treatment of white citizens in South Africa.
