Experts note that such actions of the dog do not necessarily indicate hunger – they may indicate an experienced stress or a pronounced sense of discomfort.

“Pets owners are obsessed with the desire to understand their dogs. But although most of them think that dogs lick their lips due to hunger or stuck in the teeth of food, this is often a sign of stress or discomfort,” said specialist Matt Keides.
Zoopsychologists note that licking lips in dogs is often associated with internal stress. Such behavior is often manifested in situations that cause stress in the animal: for example, while waiting for a veterinarian, in a noisy environment or when meeting strangers.
At the same time, specialists from Dogs Trust emphasize: if the dog licks his lips after eating or drinking, this is a natural reaction. However, sometimes this gesture is associated with excessive salivation, which may indicate malaise, pain or nausea.
Experts add that dry mouth arising from anxiety is also capable of provoking such behavior. In such cases, it is better to provide the pet more calm and, if the situation is saved, consult a veterinarian or zoopsychologist.
Sometimes licking lips in a dog can appear after walking in hot weather – then this most often signals a thirst or the beginning of dehydration.
Often you can see how the puppies at the end of the rich day begin to smack slightly and lick their lips, settling on vacation. In such a situation, this acts as a way to relax and prepare for sleep.
Experts advise helping the pet to feel calmer: to talk with him in a soft tone, not to bend too close and give space, especially if he experiences stress. It is also important to maintain a stable and familiar regime of the day in order to reduce the level of anxiety in the animal.
Experts note that the dog’s gestures and habits are a form of communication with a person. These are not random habits, but signals that help the owner better understand his pet. The ability to recognize such signs allows you to strengthen trust and establish a closer relationship with the animal.
Earlier, the “cursor” wrote that one of the most noticeable gestures inherent in these animals is to lick the hands or face of the owner. Although many perceive it as a sign of love and affection, researchers emphasize: more complex reasons can be hidden behind this behavior.
