New analysis has produced the first precise age estimates for paintings in Font-de-Gaume, the prehistoric cave in France. Researchers report that microscopic fragments of charcoal embedded within black pigments — previously assumed to be purely mineral — made it possible to apply radiocarbon dating directly to the painted surfaces. The work establishes a firmer chronological framework for motifs that until now were dated only indirectly.
The dating results indicate that a depiction of a bison was applied roughly 13,000 years ago. In contrast, sections of a distinctive mask-like figure were produced during several widely separated periods, demonstrating that the panel was modified or revisited by artists over time. The discovery of organic carbon within the dark pigment therefore supplies direct evidence for multiple episodes of decoration at the site.
Methodologically, extracting minute charcoal inclusions from within applied pigment allows radiocarbon dating to provide age estimates that are directly tied to the art itself rather than to associated deposits or overlying deposits. The results for Font-de-Gaume refine the sequence of work on particular images and confirm that panels may record activity spanning millennia. The findings also underscore that pigment composition can vary within a single motif and that black areas may contain sufficient organic material for dating.
The techniques demonstrated in this analysis may be applicable at other decorated sites where dark pigments have been assumed inorganic. Applying the same approach elsewhere could yield new direct dates for prehistoric imagery and help clarify the timing and cadence of artistic practice in the wider region. For Font-de-Gaume, the dated samples provide the first direct chronological anchors for key figures and offer a basis for re-evaluating the cave’s pictorial sequence.
