United Hatzalah's governance model: Building a foundation for success

During his latest interview with the Jerusalem Post, United Hatzalah Founder and President Eli Beer shared a story that underscored the importance of dedicated leadership within the organization. Beer recounted how he approached Mark Gerson, one of the organization’s most significant supporters, and invited him to serve as chairman of its board of directors.

Beer noted that while Gerson initially suggested serving as a board member, Beer emphasized the necessity of his leadership, stating, “I said, ‘No, you need to be the chairman.’ He said, ‘Why?’ I said, ‘Because you’re the only board member I have.'”

This encounter proved pivotal, as Gerson eventually accepted the role, and the organization has since built an “incredible” board of directors. Beer attributes much of United Hatzalah’s operational success to the caliber of these board members, noting that they are “involved,” “know what’s going on,” and are committed to humble service.

“It’s not easy to create a good board,” Beer explained. He noted that the strength of their governance and the resulting networking opportunities are a primary reason for the organization’s continued growth, as high-caliber individuals are consistently drawn to join a board defined by shared purpose and collective dedication to saving lives.
