Western Europe recorded its warmest June and July on record, according to climate monitoring data, as an extensive drought leaves soils unusually dry and major waterways running at low levels. Observations from meteorological and hydrological networks indicate persistent high temperatures and below-average precipitation across broad swathes of the region, affecting surface water availability and soil moisture.
Copernicus, the EU’s climate service, said compiled temperature records for June and July exceeded previous benchmarks for the region. Independent measurements from national agencies and river authorities have shown lowered flows in several large basins, with exposed riverbeds and reduced reservoir levels reported by local monitoring stations.
The hydrological conditions have had operational impacts in parts of Western Europe. The World Meteorological Organization has highlighted the prospect of a strengthening El Niño this year, a development that could elevate global temperatures later in the season and influence weather patterns worldwide. Meteorological services stress that ongoing monitoring will be needed to assess how this broader climate signal interacts with regional conditions and drought persistence in Europe.
