Hidden no more, a previously unrecognised frog has been identified in the flooded forests of the western Amazon. Researchers separated this amphibian from nearly identical relatives by combining genetic analysis with the animal’s distinctive call. The discovery adds a new species to a region already known for exceptional biodiversity, while also drawing attention to how many organisms remain undocumented in habitats that are difficult to survey.
The newly described species, Adenomera varcena, was distinguished on the basis of DNA differences and its vocal pattern, traits that often reveal cryptic diversity among visually similar frogs. The flooded forest environment where it was found is seasonally inundated and supports a suite of specialised plants and animals. Because such ecosystems are patchy and hard to access for much of the year, scientists say many species there can elude detection for decades despite being vulnerable to disturbance.
The finding has practical implications for conservation. Habitat loss and the effects of climate change are altering inundation regimes and fragmenting forest cover across the Amazon, placing pressure on populations that are still poorly known. When species are recognised only after significant habitat change has occurred, opportunities for timely protection can be missed.
