State indicts man for attacking nun in Jerusalem’s Old City

The State Attorney’s Office indicted 36-year-old Yonah Shreiber on Thursday for attacking a nun in Jerusalem’s Old City.

The incident, which drew widespread condemnation, took place last Wednesday in an alley near King David’s Tomb in Jerusalem. Israel Police officers arrested Shreiber shortly afterward.

According to the indictment, Shreiber decided to attack the nun only after seeing that she was visibly dressed in clothing reflecting her faith.

The indictment, as well as video footage from the scene, showed Shreiber running toward the nun and forcefully pushing her to the ground.

While she lay on the ground, he kicked her, according to the indictment. When a passerby tried to intervene, Shreiber allegedly punched and kicked him as well.

The nun suffered facial bruising and bruises to her legs. Shreiber was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm, motivated by hostility toward a public because of religion, as well as common assault.

In one incident, an IDF soldier smashed the face of a Jesus Christ statue while posted in a southern Lebanese village. He was later relieved of combat duties and sentenced to 30 days in military detention.

On Wednesday, a photo was uploaded by a different IDF soldier showing him smoking a cigarette while placing another cigarette in the mouth of a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Additionally, on Palm Sunday, marked this year on March 29, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa was heading to church for Sunday Mass when police stopped his convoy and forced it to turn back, according to the Latin Patriarchate.
