The Europa League has once again delivered a thrilling night of action, with several teams picking up crucial points in their respective groups. Two English sides and one Scottish team were in action, and while the results didn’t necessarily raise the bar, they did offer a glimpse into the complexities of this unpredictable competition.
Tottenham, looking to maintain their perfect start, overcame a less-than-inspiring performance to take down AZ Alkmaar 1-0. Manchester United, on the other hand, was held to a 1-1 draw by Fenerbahce, a match that had an interesting subplot with Jose Mourinho, the former Red Devils boss, being sent off.
As for the rest of the action, Ajax traveled to Azerbaijan and came away with a 3-0 victory over Qarabag, making it a perfect night on the road for the Dutch side. Kenneth Taylor, Wout Weghorst, and Chuba Akpom were the goalscorers, while Qarabag had their woes compounded by two players being sent off.
Roma, meanwhile, was able to grind out a 1-0 win at home against Dynamo Kyiv, thanks to a 23rd-minute penalty converted by Artem Dovbyk. The Italian side could have had more goals, but overall, it was a solid, if not dominant, display.
Athletic Bilbao continued its decent start in the competition, picking up a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Slavia Prague. Nico Williams scored the only goal of the game, and while the Czech side had its chances, it was unable to find the back of the net.
Lyon, on the other hand, was stunned by Besiktas, who took a 1-0 win back to Turkey. Gedson Fernandes scored the only goal of the game, and it capped off a dismal night for Lyon, which managed just 30 shots despite its best efforts.
Finally, Rangers made it a nightmare for FCSB, dominating the Romanian side and taking a convincing 4-0 victory. Tom Lawrence, Vaclav Cerny, and Hamza Igamane were the men on the scoresheet, as the Scottish side asserted its superiority.
The Europa League is known for its unpredictability, and Thursday’s matches only added to that reputation. As we head into the next round of games, teams will be looking to build momentum, but for now, it’s all about the points in the bank.
