The product is described as a specially designed gum that releases active compounds in the oral cavity during chewing, allowing sustained local exposure without systemic delivery. In the trial, participants who used the gum showed marked declines in HPV viral load and substantial reductions in two bacterial taxa previously linked to increased risk of malignancy in the upper aerodigestive tract. At the same time, commensal species commonly considered beneficial were largely retained, limiting disruption of the broader oral microbiome.
Study investigators report the dual effect — antiviral and antibacterial activity targeted to the mouth — as a notable finding because current systemic treatments can carry broader side effects and higher cost. The authors emphasize that the gum represents a targeted delivery approach that could complement vaccination and screening programs, while avoiding wholesale eradication of beneficial bacteria. They describe the results as preliminary and call for larger, controlled trials to confirm efficacy and safety over longer follow-up periods.
